Being a Brother or Sister pages 124-125

Guess The Covered Word of the text from these pages may be one way of introducing the vocabulary:

In this selection you're going to read next you'll hear brothers and sisters of all ages talk about their families."

Before reading teacher should lead a discussion:

Set purpose — while you are reading today think about your relationships with your brothers, sisters, cousins.

During reading —

How you read depends on the reading level of your students and the reading level of the text. You may want to read a paragraph or section then have a time to share stories after each section.

After reading — Discussion of how the text connects to self. Let the children share their brother and sister stories. What is it like having a brother, a sister, a big brother, a little brother, an older sister, a younger sister, a newborn in the house, a two-year old, a teenager, grown-ups, twins....

I like to have my students read with partners so I remind the students what to do during partner reading: I want you to pay attention to what you are learning. Read one page and then tell your partner something that you learned from this page. I call this "Say Something." Then your partner must also say something they learned on the page.

After reading —

Writing Extension — Bring a photo of your family and write about what is happening in the photo.
