Monday

Before reading

Picture Walk, discuss what are characters, setting, problems, solution 

During Reading

Teacher reads big book, Yuk Soup, to the class.

Then the children echo read with the teacher. 

After Reading

Discuss characters, setting, problem, solution 

Tuesday

Before Reading

Discuss what is in regular soup? What is in Yuk Soup? While you read pay attention to what is in the yuk soup.  

During Reading

Choral Reading of little books of Yuk Soup 

After Reading

Make a predictable chart of what they could put in yuk soup using this sentence:  
 

Wednesday

Before Reading

Today we are going to pay attention to how a sentence is put together. The words have to make sense. They have to match a sentence strip. The sentence starts with a capital, ends with a punctuation mark, and makes sense.  

During Reading

Choral read little books. 

After Reading

Each child got a cut up sentence strip of their sentence from yesterday. They put it back together. Messed it up again. Put it back to together again. They glued it on a paper and drew a picture to go with it.

Sentences about what happened to the apple in the story. Child generated sentences. Teacher writes the sentences as the children tell what happened to the apple.

Think about the order that the story takes place. What happened first, etc. Think about sequencing.  

During Reading

Hand out the sentence strips to * of class. Children stood up while holding a sentence strip. The other * of the class read the book and put the sentences back in order. Switched roles and repeated the activity.

Wednesday

Before Reading

During Reading

Read book, call on partners to read, one person, * class, all boys, all girls, different on each page.  

After Reading

Divide the class into partners. Previously prepared Cut up sentences in envelopes. Did not tell the partners which sentence they had to put back in order. Partners worked together to put it together. Then had one person mess it up and the other person put it back together. Switch.

Thursday

Before Reading

Today when you are reading, think about what your favorite part of the book is. After we read today, you will tell me your favorite part and draw a picture of it.  

During Reading

Same as yesterday: Read book, call on partners to read, one person, * class, all boys, all girls, different on each page. 

After Reading

Writing connected to Reading

The children write about their favorite part of the story using the sentence starter....

Discuss what partners do when they read together. Sit hip to hip. Share the book. Take turns. Help each other. Etc.  

Set purpose for reading. Think about what will happen next to the apple tree.
