Day
Three & Four: Cause and Effect
Before
Reading: Read aloud page 210 and ask children to listen for one thing
that causes another to happen. For example, the text says Ronald makes
a wiggly snowflake. Right after that it says that he didn’t cut on the
lines. Therefore, Ronald not cutting on thee lines caused the snowflake
to look wiggly. Explain that one way to ask yourself why something happened.
Read aloud the first paragraph on page 211 and point out that Miss Tyler
gave Ronald a note. Ask children why that happened. Miss Tyler wanted
Ronald’s parents to know he might need glasses. Use the children to
find words and picture clues on pages 22-23 that show Sarunna is feeling
happy now that she has made friends. What does that tell children about
Sarunna’s views on friends and friendship? Friends make people feel
happy. Use the following web to record the causes and effects throughout
the story. Read each page to chart what happens then figure out what caused
it. Ask what is happening?

causes and effects. It doesn’t matter if the children offer causes or
effects. The student is not responsible for determining which column the
response goes in. Simply record each response in the correct column and
then seek the related cause or effect. If the child gave states that Ronald’s
snowflake looked wiggly on page 210. The teacher records this in the effects
column. The teacher asks, “What caused the snowflake to look wiggly?”
