Tony’s Bread        DAY ONE

By Tomie dePaola

Before reading

The "ERT" or Everyone Read To... strategy encourages the students to really read the book. See Guided Reading the Four Blocks Way book chapter 18 pages 169-173.

Some of the guidelines found on page 173:

  • Choose text for which you think children need page by page guidance
  • Plan a before and after reading activity which will develop comprehension strategies.
  • Lead the children through the text a page or two at a time. Have students read to find out or figure out important events or information.
  • Include questions to which the answers are not literally stated, but which can be inferred.
  • Have the children raise their hands when they read the part that helps them to figure out the answer.
  • When most hands are up, ask a volunteer to give you the answer. Ask someone else to read the parts aloud that helped them figure out the answer.

When the answers are not literally stated, ask children to explain how they figured it out.

During reading

Pages 18-23

Read to FIND out how Tony treats his daughter.

Read to FIGURE out why Serafina is crying. DO you feel sorry for Serafina? Why or Why not?

Read to FIND out who will help Serafina.

After reading

What part of the text helps you answer / explain your answer for these questions. Make sure that ONE partner answers the question and the other partner reads the text to JUSTIFY their answer. In the after discussion, have the students share their thinking. How did you figure that answer out? What part of the text led you to that conclusion?

Summarize the story so far (Whole Class) using these sentence starters:

(see page 19)  Once upon a time…

(see pages 20-21) Tony treats Serafina like…

(see page 22)  Angelo came to…

Tony’s Bread        DAY TWO

By Tomie dePaola

Before reading

Review yesterday’s summary. Review ERT strategy.

During reading

Read pages 24-29

Everyone Read to FIGURE out what is Angelo’s plan? Will it be successful? Do you think Tony should trust Angelo? Find places in the text to support your opinion.

After reading

Discuss the ERT questions. Point out that as readers they have a distinct advantage over Tony. They can see things about Angelo that Tony can’t see. By carefully weighing the evidence on both sides, they can make a judgment about whether to trust Angelo.

Making Judgments TE27

Make a T Chart like this one:

    Reasons to Trust Angelo

    Reasons NOT to trust Angelo

    He has good manners
  • He seems to love Serafina.
  •

    He’s a stranger.
  • He secretly asks the sisters to help him.
  • He sends Serafina a secret letter
  • He flatters Tony.
  • 2 reasons to trust Angelo

4 reasons NOT to trust Angelo

Tony’s Bread        DAY THREE

By Tomie dePaola

Before reading

Review yesterday’s discussion about making judgments. Review ERT strategy.

During reading

Read pages 30-35

Everyone Read to FIND out how Tony invented panettone. Do you think Panettone would have been invented if Tony had stayed in his small village?

After reading

What part of the text helps you answer / explain your answer for these questions. Make sure that ONE partner answers the question and the other partner reads the text to JUSTIFY their answer. In the after discussion, have the students share their thinking. How did you figure that answer out? What part of the text led you to that conclusion?

Reread page 31. How do you make panettone? Write the directions step by step as a whole class. Discuss the importance of following the steps in the correct order. What might have happened if Tony had omitted a step or done something out of order?
