First Grade

“The Garden” from the book, Frog and Toad Together by Arnold Lobel 

Before reading

To build prior knowledge, the teacher should read about planting seeds. If time allows, plant seeds (grass works really well). Talk about the cycle of plant life. Book suggestion: From Seed to Plants by Gail Gibbons. 

During reading

Today while you are reading pay attention to all the things that Toad does to help the seeds grow.  

How to reading Pick-A-Page

Assign two children to each page (There are 10 pages of text in the basal.) See Guided Reading the Four Blocks Way, chapter 23 “Pick a Page” for more directions. 

Steps:

Choose a selection that your children will enjoy and has enough pages.

Divide it into pages.

Let the children know which page they will read.

Have the children gather by page number and practice reading their page.

Enforce the NO PEEKING rule

Have the children gather into two groups to read his/her page aloud. 

After reading

Make a list of what the Toad did to help his seed. 

  • Toad plants the seeds
  • Toad tells the seed to start growing
  • Toad put his head down and said loudly now seeds start growing
  • Toad shouted now seeds start growing
  • Toad brought candles to the seeds so they aren’t in the dark
  • Toad read to the seeds
  • Toad sang songs
  • Toad read poems
  • Toad played music

During reading  

Read with a partner to find these answers and fill in the chart. See Guided Reading the Four Blocks Way, “Partner Reading”, page 169 for more guidelines to Partner Reading.

Everyone read PAGE 23 to FIND out what Frog told Toad that the seeds need to grow.

Everyone look at the pictures to FIGURE out what really helped the seeds grow. 

Share the chart with the students. They can begin filling in the spaces as they find answers.
