Day Two: Cause and Effect

Before Reading: Readers can improve their understanding if they try to figure out the cause and effect of story events. Good readers ask themselves what is happening and what is causing this to happen. Read page 263. Ask children the children what Ruby did and how this effected Angela’s feelings towards Ruby? Ruby copies Angela’s Dress; therefore, Angela doesn’t whisper anything this time. She is mad. Explain that this is a cause the effect relationship. Ruby caused Angela to act this way. Today read through this story to find the cause and effect connections between what Ruby and Angela do.

During Reading: ERT

After Reading: Share causes and effects.

Day Three: Main Idea/Summarize

Before Reading: The main idea is the author’s most important idea. Read 255 and help students to right ONE sentence that summarizes the main idea from this pgae. Monday is Ruby first day in Miss Hart’s class. As you read each 2 page spread, think of one sentence that summaries the main idea of the 2 pages.

During Reading: ERT

After Reading: Gather sentences in order. These maybe used for a “who mixed-up our sentences” activity.

OR
