Guided Reading Lesson Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip

Day 1 -- Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip
Comprehension skill -- building prior knowledge and building 
anticipation for reading

Before reading -- Play "Wheel of Fortune" to introduce vocabulary 
words:
atom current magnet electromagnet switch filament

Make a web on electricity place words from "Wheel of Fortune" as well 
as
power plant steam turbine generator volts

During reading -- Look through the book together and discuss that their 
are four parts of text and their purposes (continuous text, bubbles, 
information on notebooks, graphics) Read the graphics. What did the 
graphics add to our knowledge of electricity?

After reading -- Add information to the web learned from the graphics 
in 
Magic School Bus.


Day Two -- Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip
Teacher should have three copies of the book to cut up into sections so 
that each group can have three copies of the text so they can follow 
along with the book as the other two in the group read.

Before reading -- review the web.

Comprehension skill -- text strategy: building fluency

During reading "Pick a Page"
Assign pages to groups of three
Break book into seven parts:
pages 6-11; pages 12-18; pages 19-23; pages 24-29; pages 30-35; pages 
36-41; pages 42-45

Each person reads only part of the text at a time:
Reader I will read through the speech bubbles
Then on the next read, Reader 2, will read through the continuous text
Then on the next read, Reader 3, will read the information.

After reading -- look for words on the web and add information on any 
words included in their sections.

QUICK WRITE -- Write about the section. What is the gist? Summarize. 
Key 
words. What do I want to remember?

Day Three -- Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip

Before reading
Each small group will prepare for a group presentation by writing about 
their section.
a summary
web words
read fluently

During reading
As a small group prepare the above items using the book to aid them.

After reading
Pages 6-11 group will:
One reader will read their summary out loud
One reader will read web words to add to the webs
Continue with each of the seven groups



Day Four -- Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip

Before reading -- Today I want you to practice reading fluently. As you 
are reading today, remember to read with expression and loud enough for 
the others in the group to hear you and understand what is being read.

Comprehension skill -- text strategy: building fluency

During reading
Put one student from each page numbered group into a group to read the 
entire text.
There will be three groups of 7 people in each group. Students take 
turns and read ONLY the continuous text to their group. The student 
with 
pages 6-11 reads the continuous text. The student with pages 12-18 
reads 
the continuous text. Etc.

After reading
Write a paragraph or an important poem showing understanding of 
electricity.
