Text Strategy: Narrative Text Structure
See Chapter 4 of Guided Reading the Four
Blocks Way book
- As
children read, help them to note that the text is in two places. Stop
at the end of the first block of text and have the children locate the
picture that goes with it to the right.
- Keep
in mind the events of the story. What happens in the beginning of the
story? What should I remember as the important parts from the beginning?
Who is better at cartwheels, Louanne or Arnie? How can you tell? I know
that Louanne wants to try out for the cheerleading squad. What problem
does she have? What do you think she can do to solve this problem?
- Keep
in mind the events in the story. What happened in the middle of the
story? What happened when Louanne tried out for the cheerleading squad?
What happened when Arnie tried to catch a football? What do you think
will happen when Arnie tries out for the football team?
- Keep
in mind the events in the story. What happened at the end of the story?
Was this what you thought would happen? How did you predict the story
would end?
During reading
Make a list of events that happen in the
story. What happens in the beginning? The middle? The end?
After reading
Discuss the events and where in the text
the children found these answers.
Louanne
Pig in Making the Team Second Reading
Before
reading – compare and contrast
When I read a story, I think about how the
characters are alike and how they are different. At the beginning of the
story I learned that both Louanne and Arnie wanted to try out for a team.
Then I found out that Louanne, who wanted to be on the cheerleading squad
couldn’t do a split.
Start a venn diagram.

During reading
Have the students read to find out information

After reading
Fill in the class venn diagram together.
