Family Time — Theme 5

Jalapeno Bagels by Natasha Wing   FIRST READING

Before reading — to build vocabulary, Guess The Covered Word (pages 154-155) may be used.

Have you ever stepped inside a bakery and smelled fresh bread baking? Have you wondered how bread is made? Bakers prepare their dough and bake it early in the day, usually before sunrise, so that customers may have the freshest bread possible. The ingredients may change, but the idea is the same: everyone loves a treat from the bakery. Most cultures around the world eat breads or baked goods. Almost all bread recipes use some sort of flour and water. The rest is up to the baker.

During reading — Strategy Focus

A boy and his family are getting ready for an important event at school. Read the selection carefully, and think of questions to ask about their plans. See Strategies That Work Chapter 7 (pages 83-85) Questioning: The Strategy That Propels Readers Forward

As you read the book, list the questions on the board.

After reading — Categorize the questions:

  • Questions that are answered in the text — A
  • Questions that are answered from someone's background knowledge — BK
  • Questions whose answers can be inferred from the text — I
  • Questions that can be answered by further discussion — D
  • Questions that require further research to be answered — RS
  • Questions that signal confusion — HUH?

As we look at the questions, we can work together as a class to code them. Since we adhere to the gradual release of responsibility approach to instruction, we are likely to introduce these question categories slowly and deliberately, adding new ones as kids develop facility with them.

Some teachers use these prompts from Guided Reading the Four Blocks Way page 78 to encourage questions:

  • I wonder what it means when...
  • I don't understand...
  • It didn't make sense when...
  • I'm going to reread that, because it didn't make sense that...
