By Suzy Kline

Before reading

Comprehension strategy - Fluency

Complete RIVET with these vocabulary words: coughs, pretend, discovered, secret, poems, sheet, curious

(See Month By Month Phonics for Third Grade pages 109-111 for further directions.)

Skills in Context Objective: Students will recognize the distinguishing features of a play or drama.

Help students understand the characteristics of a play and identify examples in Herbie and Annabelle. Have the students talk about plays they have seen. Help them identify characters and settings.

  • A play is a story written by a playwright. It is meant to be acted out for an audience.
  • The words the characters say or the dialogue are labeled with each character’s name. Some plays have a narrator who talks to the audience and explains things.
  • A play has a setting, which tells time and place.
  • Plays can use sound effects.

Steps for a successful play:

(See Guided Reading the Four Blocks Way pages 102-109 for further directions.)

  • Divide your class into 5 even groups (the number in each group depends on your class number. If you have 20 students, there are 5 groups of 4 members in each group.)
  • Assign each group one of the parts for reading the play, Herbie and Annabelle.

Group 1 Narrator

Group 2 SFX Person

Group 3 Herbie Jones

Group 4 Mr. Hodgekiss

Group 5 Annabelle Louisa Hodgekiss

Make sure groups 3 and 4 have only boys in them.

Make sure group 5 has only girls in it.

During reading
  • Each group will read THEIR part only. All members of group one are Narrators. This way they support each other’s reading and get fluent in their part.
  • THEN reorganize the members so you have a group of one narrator, one SFX person, one Herbie, one Hr. Hodgekiss and one Annabelle. Keep making groups until all the children are in play groups.
  • READ the play fluently

After reading

Discuss how their reading improved after practicing their parts several times. What are different things you can do in a play? Which part would you enjoy most? Students should give reasons to support their choice.

Herbie and Annabelle     SECOND READING

By Suzy Kline

Before reading

Students will recognize cause and effect relationships. Explain to the students that as they read, they need to think not only about what happens, but also about why it happens. Write cause and effect on the board. Give each child a paper with a table with CAUSE and EFFECT headings. Remind students that Annabelle stayed home from school because she was sick. Help students identify the cause and effect in this event.

A cause is why something happens. An effect is what happens.

As you read, look for clue words such as, if, then, because, since, and so to help you understand what happens and why it happens.
