Anthony Reynoso Born to Rope   FIRST READING option 1

By Martha Cooper

Objective: Students will understand the distinguishing features of a biography.

Comprehension Strategy: Inferences

Ideas for inference come from the book, Strategies That Work.

Before reading

Throughout the story, the author leaves clues to lead the reader to make inferences to better understand as the author’s white dog pops up in every story.

During reading

Making notes of where the inferences occur and what the inference is.

While the students are reading, highlight or mark a sentence or picture with an “I” for inference. Many teachers provide sticky notes so the students can write an “I” on it then place it on the sentence or picture. Then have the students write down the sentence or describe the picture that surfaces the inference. Record what the inference was also.

After reading

Class discussion

To teach inferences, the teacher should encourage children to use verbal responses such as:

* I think...

* Maybe it means...

* I’m guessing that...

* I predict...

An extension activity for inference instruction is playing the game, charades. Taking turns reading faces and body language is another good activity. We make inferences about a person’s feelings based on their body language and facial expressions. When a teacher feigns crying, the kids are likely to infer sadness.

Comprehension Strategy: Inferences

If your students are unfamiliar with inferences, you may want to use the ERT strategy and guide their thinking while you read text selection together.

During reading

Set purposes for the reading of these pages:

While the children are reading, guide their reading. Have the students read the assigned pages with their partner. Instruct the students to tell their partner what they think the answer is. Then find the place in the book that justifies their answer.

Everyone Read To Strategy (ERT...)

Everyone Read to FIGURE out who seems to be telling this story. How can

you tell?

Before reading

Text Strategy: Reading an autobiography. Teacher should lead a discussion of what is an autobiography. Discuss the genre. Help students understand the characteristics of a autobiography.

  • It is the true story of a real person’s life. It may tell about a whole life or one or more events from that life.
  • The author may create dialogue and details to add interest, but the story is true to the facts.
  • It includes the story elements of setting, characterization, plot and theme.

During reading

While you are reading, think about how you know this selection is a biography. Think about where in the text supports your answers.

After reading

Teacher should lead a discussion. As a group identify details that show this selection is a autobiography. Use the text to justify your answers.

Before reading

Author’s Purpose Objective: Students will identify an author’s purpose in a text.

Author’s purpose is the author’s reason for writing. Authors write for different reasons. They might want to explain something, tell an interesting story, share their feelings about something, or convince readers to think a certain way or do something. An author may try to inform, or explain something, or try to entertain you. Have students identify the purpose of one of their own writings.

During reading

Select a few of these questions to lead a discussion about author’s purpose.

  • Read pages 74-75. What do you think the author’s purpose is here? Why do you think that?
  • Why do you think Martha Cooper and Ginger Gordon made this book? Use details and information from the story to support your answer.
  • Why do you think the author and photographer chose to include the photos and text on page 82?
  • What reason do you think the author has to include so many pictures of Anthony and his dad roping?
  • Why do you think the authors explain that Rodeo is Mexico’s national sport?
  • What do the authors want readers to know about Anthony’s work as a student?
  • Why do you think readers are told that only Anthony’s best friends know about his trick roping?
  • What message do you think the authors are giving readers by describing the amount of time Anthony spends practicing?

After reading

Discuss the answers using the text to support your answers.
